The Nigerian government announced on Friday that the military had rescued 46 children who were abducted by Islamist militants about two months ago from three schools in the town of Orire in southwestern Oyo state.
A government spokesperson said several militants were killed and eight were arrested during the rescue operation. Oyo state officials reported that one teacher died in captivity, according to Reuters.
Militant groups and gangs in Nigeria have increasingly resorted to kidnappings for ransom in recent years, often targeting schools. However, such attacks are more common in the northern regions than in the southwest.
Further details are expected as the situation develops.
