Lautaro Martinez scored a 92nd-minute winner as Lionel Messi inspired World Cup holders Argentina to a stunning 2-1 comeback victory over England in the semifinal in Atlanta, setting up a final against European champions Spain.

England took the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon and were on course for their first World Cup final since 1966. But Argentina struck twice late on to snatch victory.

Messi set up Enzo Fernandez for the equalizer in the 85th minute, then crossed for substitute Martinez to head home the winner in stoppage time, sparking chaotic celebrations.

Argentina now have a chance to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to retain the World Cup. Messi will become only the second player after Cafu to appear in three finals.

England will face France in the third-place playoff. The Three Lions will regret sitting back after Gordon's opener, allowing Argentina to dominate the final stages.
