US President Donald Trump has ordered the declassification of intelligence reports alleging Chinese interference in US elections, claiming Beijing obtained 220 million US voter records and calling it a major threat to democracy.
Speaking from the White House, Trump alleged that China carried out "the largest compromise of election data in history," beginning during the 2020 election cycle. He said he directed the Director of National Intelligence and the FBI to investigate.
Trump argued that the US electoral system is exposed to manipulation and corruption, and that states are being notified of potential data breaches. He renewed calls for Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, introducing nationwide voter ID requirements.
Trump criticized ABC and NBC for not airing his speech live, suggesting they should lose their licenses. CNN carried the address online and on its subscription service, limiting its reach.
The White House published related documents on its website. The allegations are expected to intensify debate over election security and foreign interference in the United States.
