US President Donald Trump delivered a primetime address Thursday, repeating unsubstantiated claims of Chinese interference in the 2020 election and touting declassified documents. However, a DW fact-check found most of his allegations to be misleading or unproven.
Trump claimed China stole data on 220 million US voters, but the documents show only public voter information from six states was downloaded. The US intelligence community concluded in 2021 that China did not interfere in the election, unlike Russia and Iran.
Trump also cited a 2020 case in Muskegon, Michigan, alleging fraudulent voter registrations. The FBI investigated from 2020 to 2025, closing the case after finding no criminal violations. The investigation spanned both Trump and Biden administrations.
Trump's claim that 278,000 non-citizens are registered to vote remains unproven. DHS documents provide no source for the number. Experts say non-citizen voting is extremely rare, with audits finding only a handful of cases.
DW's fact-check concludes that Trump's allegations are either false or lack evidence. The 2020 election was deemed the most secure in US history, with no evidence of widespread fraud.
