A UK-based humanitarian worker who was treating Ebola patients in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been medically evacuated to a specialist hospital in London for monitoring.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) described the evacuation as a “highly precautionary measure,” noting that the individual is not currently displaying any symptoms and remains well.

The incubation period for Ebola ranges from 2 to 21 days, and the person will be isolated and closely monitored by infectious disease specialists throughout this period.

No confirmed cases of Ebola exist in the UK, and the risk to the general public remains low.

Richard Pebody, director of epidemic and emerging infections at UKHSA, stated: “This individual has been transferred out of an abundance of caution and we’re pleased they remain well.”

Last month, a patient suspected of having Ebola at a Glasgow hospital tested negative.

An outbreak in the DRC and Uganda in May was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the World Health Organization.

The virus is transmitted from wild animals to humans and spreads through direct contact with blood, bodily fluids, and contaminated surfaces. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.
