In the early hours of August 20, Kyiv and the surrounding region were subjected to a massive missile and drone attack. According to RBC-Ukraine, the assault lasted approximately nine hours.
The attack killed 15 people in Kyiv, with more than half of the casualties occurring in the Solomenskyi district, where a nine-story residential building was hit. At least 39 others were injured. August 21 was declared a day of mourning in the Ukrainian capital.
Kyiv authorities reported strikes in three districts of the city, damaging residential buildings, warehouses, and critical infrastructure. The Zhytomyr, Kherson, Kharkiv, and Donetsk regions also came under attack.
Citing Ukrainian territorial military administrations, CNN reported that over the past 24 hours, the death toll across Ukraine has reached 23, with 132 more injured.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 36 Kh-101, Iskander-K, and Kh-59 cruise missiles, eight Kalibr missiles, two Banderol missiles, as well as Oniks, Zircon, Iskander-M, and S-400 ballistic missiles (number unspecified), and 168 drones during the night.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed it had carried out a "massive strike with high-precision weapons" across Ukraine. The ministry's statement said the strike targeted "military-industrial enterprises, a transport-logistics center, and warehouses in Kyiv and the Kyiv region."
The Russian Defense Ministry also claimed that Russian air defense forces intercepted and destroyed over 720 Ukrainian drones over several regions, including the Moscow region and Tatarstan, during the night.
