Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that the misuse of artificial intelligence by malicious actors could result in the deaths of up to a billion people. He called on the US regime to participate in controlling the development of AI.
Gates links the danger to increasingly powerful AI tools falling into the hands of people intentionally seeking to cause large-scale harm. These technologies can significantly enhance their capabilities and speed of action. The combination of powerful AI systems with malicious actors, according to Gates, could create a threat of unprecedented scale.
In an interview with NBC News for Meet the Press, Gates stated that self-regulation by tech companies alone is insufficient. According to him, legislators, law enforcement, and other government bodies must participate in defining safety requirements and monitoring AI systems.
At the same time, Gates noted that government regulation should not significantly slow the industry's development. He believes that additional requirements will be a burden for companies but should not halt the development of new technologies.
Speaking about potential consequences, Gates emphasized that the danger of AI is not limited to hypothetical scenarios of the distant future. According to him, even today, the combination of powerful AI tools and people with malicious intent poses an unprecedented threat.
The debate on limiting AI development in the US has intensified after the heads of Anthropic and OpenAI advocated for slowing the race to create more powerful systems. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei also called for government and international cooperation in this area.
However, there is no unified position among the leaders of major tech companies. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that he does not consider industry-wide coordination necessary and believes that each laboratory should independently ensure the safety of its developments.
The issue of regulation is also being discussed at the level of individual US states. In California, Maryland, and New York, authorities have already introduced initiatives aimed at strengthening control over the use and development of AI.
