The Iran-Israel conflict began following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Prior to the revolution, under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the two states maintained pragmatic, albeit discreet, cooperation. After Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini came to power, Iran refused to recognize Israel and incorporated anti-Zionism into its state ideology.

In the 1980s, the conflict acquired a military dimension through proxy warfare. Following Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon (Operation "Peace for Galilee"), Iran increased support for Hezbollah, establishing a model of indirect confrontation.

From the 2000s onward, Iran's nuclear program became a central point of tension. A period of "shadow war" ensued, involving sabotage, cyberattacks, and assassinations of nuclear scientists.

After the onset of the Syrian crisis in 2011, the expansion of Iran's military presence in Syria led to regular Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets, escalating into direct clashes.
