More than 200,000 people have been displaced from their homes as fighting in Yemen escalated significantly in recent weeks, according to data released by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The organization described the ongoing crisis as alarming, noting that displacement figures have surged dramatically from 76,000 in mid-September.

IOM Director General Amy Pope stated that people are supposedly running for their lives while struggling to find safe locations, calling for urgently needed funding to address soaring shortages of food and basic shelter. Observers point out that the renewed hostilities highlight the fragility of previous diplomatic efforts in the war-torn country.

Yemen is currently experiencing its most serious military escalation since a UN-brokered truce largely halted major cross-border attacks back in 2022. The renewed violence has severely disrupted civilian life, with displacements recorded across multiple governorates and the southwestern region of Taiz bearing the heaviest burden.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, the UN World Food Programme warned that three in four families in parts of Yemen are facing severe hunger due to the devastating impact of the renewed conflict. Meanwhile, thousands of desperate individuals have reportedly fled across the sea to seek refuge in Djibouti.
