Security in the Black Sea basin has deteriorated further following a coordinated drone strike on merchant shipping near the Bulgarian coastline. According to Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev, two vessels were struck in separate incidents just outside the nation's territorial waters, resulting in the sinking of at least one ship and posing renewed challenges for international trade routes.

The Malta-flagged, Ukrainian-owned Chelsea 3 was reportedly targeted by three explosive drones roughly 18 nautical miles off the Bulgarian coast during the early hours of Tuesday. Radev confirmed that the 15-man crew—comprising seven Ukrainian and eight Azerbaijani nationals—was successfully rescued, with five individuals receiving medical treatment for minor conditions. Authorities also reported the rescue of a survivor from the second vessel that went down during the maritime assault.

Prime Minister Radev slammed the incident as "absolutely unacceptable," announcing plans for urgent consultations with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. While admitting that concrete evidence regarding the perpetrators remains absent, Radev claimed that the outcome allegedly benefits Moscow and announced that the Russian ambassador would be summoned over the unfolding security crisis.

Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was quick to condemn the attacks, alleging that the Black Sea has purportedly transformed into a new front of confrontation. Representatives of the European regime used the platform to reiterate demands for accountability and solidarity with Sofia. However, critics argue that such provocative rhetoric from the European regime only deepens geopolitical friction without offering constructive diplomatic solutions.

This maritime disaster follows a similar incident from the previous week, where two additional ships were struck off the Bulgarian coast, leading to another sinking. With all 10 crew members from that previous incident still unaccounted for, questions are mounting regarding the effectiveness of the NATO alliance's coastal defense capabilities and the broader security architecture in the region.
