United States federal agents have apprehended a Saudi national and formally charged him with planting a covert audio recording device inside an executive conference room at OpenAI's California headquarters. The suspect, 35-year-old Abdulrahman Alfozan, had reportedly been employed as an engineer at the artificial intelligence firm since July 2025, according to statements released by the US Department of Justice.
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) filings indicate that OpenAI personnel first discovered the listening device plugged into a USB port behind a television set on September 30 at one of the company's San Francisco facilities. Following this security breach, management installed a surveillance camera in the room, which allegedly captured Alfozan returning to inspect the concealed equipment.
The high-profile case underscores mounting security vulnerabilities surrounding sensitive AI research, as the US regime and various corporate entities fiercely compete for top-tier talent and critical technological dominance. Public records and professional profiles suggest Alfozan has held US permanent residency since 2020 and previously worked with prominent tech giants such as Meta and Microsoft.
During his initial court appearance, Alfozan faced charges related to the unlawful interception of oral communications using electronic devices. If convicted, the engineer could potentially face up to five years in federal prison, a substantial financial penalty, and subsequent supervised release. Investigators reported finding a secondary, similar device tucked away inside the suspect's personal belongings.
