US prosecutors have alleged that a former OpenAI engineer accused of planting a hidden listening device at the company's San Francisco headquarters supposedly booked a one-way flight to Saudi Arabia prior to his apprehension. According to unsealed court documents, Abdulrahman Alfozan was scheduled to depart for the Middle East alongside his wife and another relative.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation took the 35-year-old engineer into custody on October 9 after corporate personnel reportedly discovered an electronic surveillance device in a conference room. Alfozan, who spent roughly 15 months at the artificial intelligence firm before his termination, faces charges of utilizing electronic equipment to intercept oral communications, an offense that carries a potential five-year prison sentence.

Legal filings reveal that prosecutors urged a judge to seal the initial criminal complaint by arguing the defendant possessed both the financial means and a strong incentive to flee the jurisdiction. Meanwhile, defense attorney William Pernik contested the narrative presented by authorities, asserting that his client intends to vigorously fight the allegations and challenge his ongoing detention in court.

The high-profile arrest has cast a critical light on the escalating security vulnerabilities surrounding frontier technology enterprises amid fierce geopolitical and corporate competition within the artificial intelligence sector. Professional records indicate that Alfozan previously held engineering positions or internships at prominent Silicon Valley firms including Meta and Microsoft before taking on venture capital roles.
