Data compiled from Similarweb and presented by Visual Capitalist allegedly shows that the ChatGPT website recorded nearly 5.9 billion visits in September 2026. While the platform reportedly maintains its leading position among standalone chatbot websites, observers note mounting pressure as rival services steadily capture larger segments of the digital traffic.
It is claimed that alternative platforms such as Google Gemini and Anthropic Claude have substantially expanded their respective market shares, collectively gathering over a third of the analyzed chatbot web traffic. Specifically, Gemini reportedly attracted 2.6 billion visits in September, whereas Claude, securing the third position, registered close to one billion visits—surpassing the combined totals of several competing tools.
Analysts point out that these figures strictly measure browser-based visits from desktop and mobile devices rather than unique users, meaning a single individual may account for multiple sessions. Furthermore, the statistics purportedly exclude traffic from dedicated mobile applications, API integrations, and AI features embedded within broader software ecosystems, thus offering a limited view of total platform engagement.
During the evaluated period, Gemini and Claude emerged as the only major chatbot platforms to significantly increase their traffic share. The expansion of Gemini is attributed to Google's vast consumer reach, while Claude's rise is allegedly driven by its enhanced programming and information-processing capabilities. Meanwhile, the combined market share of platforms like DeepSeek, Grok, Copilot, and Perplexity experienced a noticeable contraction.
