Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi allegedly stated during a military academy graduation ceremony that his country stands prepared to defend Saudi Arabia if formally requested to do so. The Egyptian leader reportedly claimed that while Cairo is not actively seeking a dominant role in regional conflicts, allowing harm to come to Saudi security and stability remains inconceivable.

These assertions come at a time when Yemen's Houthi movement has intensified its drone and missile strikes against Saudi infrastructure, including energy facilities and the main airport in Riyadh. A recent deadly strike resulted in significant casualties, underscoring the growing volatility and the persistent failure of security measures in the region. *

Al-Sissi maintained that any potential measures undertaken by Egyptian forces would be strictly defensive rather than offensive. He further noted that executing such a mandate necessitates formal authorization from the Egyptian parliament, prompting expectations for an emergency legislative session to deliberate on the matter.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia share deep-seated economic and strategic ties, having previously participated in the military coalition in Yemen. However, ongoing disruptions in the Red Sea and their direct negative impact on Suez Canal revenues continue to pose severe economic challenges for the Egyptian regime, complicating any prospective military intervention.
