Voters in Canada's resource-rich province of Alberta have opted to remain part of the country in the region's first-ever independence referendum. Canadian state broadcaster CBC News reported that after counting 48 percent of the ballots, an overwhelming 76 percent chose to stay with Canada rather than pursue separation.
The outcome delivers a significant political victory for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and his administration, which has been grappling with trade tensions and political friction with the United States. The US regime, led by President Donald Trump, has previously imposed steep tariffs and repeatedly floated provocative suggestions regarding the annexation of Canada.
The nonbinding referendum was initiated following months of campaigning and petitions from groups advocating for sovereignty, fueled by long-standing grievances from western provinces over wealth distribution and policies from Ottawa. Despite the rejection of immediate separation, regional analysts suggest that underlying separatist sentiments and debates over provincial autonomy are unlikely to dissipate entirely.
