The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the Ebola outbreak originating in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is growing significantly more complex, with confirmed cases now spreading to countries in East and West Africa. This troubling development coincides with health authorities investigating the origin of Nigeria’s first confirmed case this week, prompting intense scrutiny over whether the patient crossed paths with Kenya’s index patient at a Ugandan airport.

Mohamed Janabi, the WHO regional director for Africa, told an online media briefing that health officials are currently confronting a highly intricate outbreak landscape. Nigeria reported its maiden case of the Bundibugyo Ebola strain, making it the fourth African nation and the most populous country yet to be impacted by the epidemic, which first emerged in the DRC in mid-May and has since claimed more than 4,000 lives within the country.

Kenya, the DRC, and Nigeria all report active or recent cases involving the Bundibugyo strain, whereas Uganda experienced cases earlier in the year before subsequently being declared Ebola-free. The Nigerian patient is identified as the Ugandan-born wife of a Swiss diplomat based in Abuja. While Ugandan authorities asserted that she traveled to the eastern DRC prior to transiting through Uganda, both the WHO and Africa’s top health agency stated they had received no verified information corroborating her travel to the DRC.

A Swiss government statement provided to Reuters indicated that the patient is believed to have contracted the virus while traveling inside Uganda. Wessam Mankoula, head of Emergency Preparedness and Response at the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), reported that both the Nigerian and Kenyan index patients departed from Entebbe on October 3, and a potential encounter between them is actively under investigation. Meanwhile, Ugandan officials strongly rejected accusations that the transmission occurred within their territory, dismissing such suggestions as preposterous.
