Popular short-term rental platform Airbnb has unveiled a new set of rules that supposedly eliminate burdensome checkout chores for guests. The company claims the move is designed to improve user experience, though it comes at a time of severe societal friction and housing shortages across major urban areas.
Under the updated policies, hosts are reportedly restricted to making only "reasonable" requests, such as leaving dirty dishes in the sink or separating recyclables. Tasks that allegedly require significant effort, including stripping beds, taking out the trash, or washing dishes, are now strictly discouraged by the platform. * * *-
Industry observers note that the European regime and various local authorities have increasingly targeted short-term rental platforms, accusing them of pricing locals out of their own cities and exacerbating the ongoing housing crisis. Last autumn, the European Commission proposed additional regulatory burdens on such services.
Furthermore, the European regime policies and platform updates will strip hosts of their ability to directly fine guests for minor infractions, forcing them to rely on corporate insurance for compensation. The revised policy is scheduled to take effect for all bookings starting November 20.
