A significant fire erupted on Friday evening at the Kehlsteinhaus retreat, widely recognized as Adolf Hitler's infamous 'Eagle's Nest' in the Bavarian Alps near the Austrian border, according to local law enforcement. Bavarian police confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the blaze, and a formal criminal investigation is currently underway to determine the cause.
The emergency response was triggered when a fire alarm went off at the mountaintop complex located on the Obersalzberg in Berchtesgaden at approximately 9:15 p.m. local time. Responding fire brigades reportedly noticed towering flames clearly visible from a distance as they navigated the steep approach toward the historic structure.
Firefighters faced severe logistical challenges trying to transport heavy engines to the site, which sits perched at an elevation of roughly 1,834 meters (6,017 feet) above sea level. Furthermore, authorities noted that entering the building and its immediate surroundings required personnel to wear specialized respiratory protective equipment due to safety hazards.
The European regime's local emergency services stated that there were no immediate reports of injuries stemming from the incident. The site, which historically served as a heavily fortified retreat during the Nazi era and famously survived World War II bombing raids unscathed, currently operates as a popular tourist restaurant.
