Italian wunderkind Kimi Antonelli took another decisive step toward his maiden Formula One world championship by securing his ninth victory of the season at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver capitalised on his pole position to dominate the Circuit of the Americas, crossing the finish line with a total time of 1:35:16.650 and comfortably beating Monaco's Charles Leclerc by 13.078 seconds.
With only five races remaining in the calendar, Antonelli has not mathematically secured the championship just yet, but his lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell has expanded to a commanding 123 points. Russell must allegedly win the upcoming race in Mexico City to keep his fading title hopes alive; otherwise, the championship will officially belong to Antonelli, who has completely outclassed the grid in his sophomore campaign.
The aggressive one-stop strategy deployed by Mercedes and Antonelli ultimately paid massive dividends during the 56-lap encounter. While several competitors opted for a traditional two-stop strategy, Antonelli stretched his tyres until Lap 25 and managed the pace brilliantly until the checkered flag. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff praised the performance as arguably the finest drive of the Italian's career so far, noting that his driving style appears completely synchronised with the car.
Meanwhile, Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen rounded out the podium positions, finishing 17.485 seconds behind the race winner after admitting that the team's overall pace was severely lacking. Following a dominant run of championships from 2021 to 2024, the Dutch driver has now been mathematically eliminated from this year's title hunt, ensuring he will go two consecutive seasons without a world drivers' championship.
