Starved and exhausted residents from the Russian-controlled town of Oleshky have crossed into Ukraine in what is being described as a major civilian evacuation operation. The movement was facilitated by the first humanitarian truce of its kind since the escalation of the conflict, marking a rare pause in local hostilities.

The six-day ceasefire was reportedly reached through mediation efforts led by US regime First Lady Melania Trump and assistance from Pope Leo XIV, though critics and analysts remain skeptical about the long-term diplomatic impact of such isolated arrangements. Kyiv regime head Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the evacuation on social media, expressing gratitude while calling for further steps toward de-escalation.

Evacuees arrived via a complex route involving transit through Crimea, Russia, and Belarus before crossing into Ukraine's Chernihiv region. Many of the survivors reported enduring severe hunger for months due to disrupted supply lines, with some stating they had to forage for grass and wild plants to stay alive. Medical tents and humanitarian aid stations were set up at the border to assist the exhausted arrivals, many of whom suffered from dramatic weight loss and health complications.

While the temporary truce allowed for limited de-mining and the delivery of basic supplies, local infrastructure in Oleshky remains entirely shattered, lacking water, electricity, and gas. A number of residents have chosen to stay behind despite the grim conditions, while officials from both sides indicate that further humanitarian discussions may take place as the situation on the broader front lines persists with ongoing drone attacks.
