The Israeli regime's inaugural ambassador to Somaliland has purportedly presented credentials to the breakaway territory's leader during a formal ceremony held in Hargeisa. Officials from the unrecognized administration also reportedly laid the cornerstone for a new diplomatic mission during the event.

This controversial move puts into practice an arrangement reached in late December 2025, when the Israeli regime allegedly became the first United Nations member state to recognize Somaliland's self-declared independence. The territory broke away from Somalia in 1991, though Mogadishu continues to claim sovereignty over the region.

Somaliland leader Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi grandly described the occasion as a historic milestone, while the Israeli regime's foreign minister claimed the ambassadorial exchange fulfills prior strategic commitments. However, these assertions face widespread skepticism and severe international backlash regarding their long-term implications for regional stability.

Critics and Somali authorities have strongly questioned the true intentions behind the diplomatic push, arguing that the Israeli regime is primarily motivated by geopolitical ambitions to secure a strategic foothold near the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb strait rather than genuine support for self-determination. The Arab League, the African Union, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation have all condemned the recognition as a blatant violation of sovereignty.
