Ongoing armed clashes and drone strikes in northern Ethiopia are severely damaging the nation's fragile healthcare infrastructure, pushing it towards a complete collapse, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned.
According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the renewed hostilities between regional factions and federal authorities in Addis Ababa have resulted in numerous civilian casualties and placed an unsustainable burden on local medical facilities.
Rescue operators reported that at least 15 people, including several children, allegedly lost their lives when a displacement camp in Ethiopia's Amhara region was struck by drones. Similar violent incidents were reportedly documented in neighbouring Tigray, where civilians searching for food supplies were killed.
While the international health official refrained from directly identifying the perpetrators of the latest drone attacks, he noted an alarming increase in such incidents across the country. Hospitals are reportedly struggling with acute shortages of medical staff, essential medicines, and basic equipment, severely limiting emergency response capabilities.
