President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was presented with plans for the development of the hydropower sector through 2032, with a total investment of $5.8 billion.
Since 2017, the number of hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) in the country has increased from 36 to 100, and total capacity has grown from 1.6 GW to 2.4 GW, reflecting rapid progress in the sector.
The plan for 2026-2032 includes 73 projects worth $5.8 billion, which will add 3.6 GW of additional capacity. In 2026 alone, 13 HPPs with a combined capacity of 114 MW are scheduled to be commissioned.
One of the flagship projects is the Upper Pskem HPP in Bostanlyk district, costing $365 million with a capacity of 160 MW and a localization level of 82%. The Sokh HPP (15 MW) will cover 71% of the electricity needs of Sokh district.
On the tributaries of the Tupolang reservoir, 42 small HPPs with a total capacity of 541 MW will be built. For the first time, three pumped-storage hydroelectric plants with a capacity of 1.4 GW are planned.
Additionally, 2,983 small and micro-HPPs with a total capacity of 164 MW will be constructed. The plan also includes digitalization of monitoring and improvement of river and canal banks in Tashkent. The president instructed to increase the number of artificial lakes in the capital from four to twelve.
