In the Surkhandarya region of Uzbekistan, a major attempt to smuggle drugs from Afghanistan has been thwarted. Officers from the State Security Service (SSS), in collaboration with border guards and customs officials at the international checkpoint "Termez-road," discovered 222 potato imitations among real vegetables in a MAN-brand cargo truck driven by a 23-year-old driver.
Inside these imitations, a narcotic substance—hashish—totaling 72 kilograms and 300 grams was concealed. According to preliminary investigation data, the drugs were intended for further transportation and sale in Russia. This incident raises serious concerns about international drug trafficking networks in the region and their detrimental impact on society.
All discovered substances have been seized and documented as material evidence, and an investigation is currently underway regarding this case. The authorities reminded citizens of the possibility to anonymously report such offenses via the SSS short number 1520, guaranteeing full confidentiality to informants, though the effectiveness of such systems and the need for additional measures to enhance public trust may be questioned.
