The US State Department has announced the production of a limited number of commemorative passports featuring a portrait of President Donald Trump as part of celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in July.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated that the passports will feature customized artwork and enhanced imagery while maintaining the same security features. The official statement did not explicitly mention Trump's portrait, but renderings provided by the department show the president's image on an inner page opposite the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
It remains unclear whether passport applicants can opt out of the special edition. According to AFP, the Trump-themed passports will only be available in Washington while supplies last, at no additional cost.
This is the latest effort by the Trump administration to attach the president's name or likeness to official property. Earlier, the US Mint announced plans for a commemorative gold coin featuring Trump's image, and the Treasury Department said paper currency will bear Trump's signature, marking the first time a sitting president has signed US money.
Modern examples of sitting leaders' portraits appearing in passports are rare, especially in democracies. Most nations prefer imagery related to their history or nature. Current US passports feature multiple historical scenes, including the Statue of Liberty and the Moon landing.
