Rescuers from Tajikistan's Committee for Emergency Situations discovered the body of Alisher Mirzonabot, chairman of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), on the morning of June 30.
On June 17, the Tajik Interior Ministry reported that Mirzonabot had died in a traffic accident. According to the ministry, the crash occurred at 10:40 a.m. on the 282nd kilometer of the Dushanbe-Khorog highway. The official Land Cruiser 200, carrying the official, his assistant, driver, and family members, was traveling at high speed when the driver lost control. The vehicle struck engineering structures, broke through barriers, and overturned into the Panj River.
Only the car's license plate and fragments were found at the scene. Following orders from President Emomali Rahmon, the interior minister, head of the State Committee for National Security, and head of the Emergency Committee traveled to the site. The investigation was placed under the personal supervision of the country's leadership.
The body was found around 5:30 a.m. local time on the water surface near the village of Kisht in the Shamsiddin Shohin district. Rescue operations continue, with searches underway for Mirzonabot's wife and two-year-old daughter, who were also in the vehicle.
Earlier, during the search operation, the bodies of other trip participants were found. On June 26, rescuers discovered a man's body initially mistaken for the regional head, but later identified as the chairman's assistant, Sadonsho Janobolisho. The driver, Sino Muborakshoev, had been found earlier.
The investigation and search-and-rescue operations are ongoing.
