The modernization of the Zhibek Zholy border checkpoint situated between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan is reaching its final stages. Upon completion, the upgraded facility is projected to become one of the most capable pedestrian crossing points in the entire region.
According to Kazakhstan's Minister of Finance, Madi Takiyev, speaking at a Kurultai meeting, the overhaul of the Zhibek Zholy checkpoint is scheduled to be finalized by the end of October. Over the past two years, the country has reportedly updated nine other crossing points, making this upcoming launch the tenth in the series.
A notable aspect of the project is its specific pedestrian-oriented format and the fact that all construction works are funded exclusively through sponsorships, avoiding any direct utilization of state budget funds. Once operational, the throughput capacity is expected to reach up to 70,000 individuals and 200 buses daily.
Officials claim this upgrade is necessary to cope with a steadily increasing traffic flow across the border. Statistical reports indicate that during the first nine months of the year, approximately 650,000 vehicles crossed the border, reflecting an increase of nearly 20% compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, the modernized Zhibek Zholy facility incorporates advanced engineering solutions and digital management systems, which are intended to streamline operations and alleviate congestion for travelers.
