Law enforcement agencies in Russia's Astrakhan region have apprehended a 22-year-old citizen of Uzbekistan who was reportedly wanted in his home country on serious criminal charges involving a minor. The suspect was intercepted as he allegedly attempted to flee Russia through the "Karaozek" automobile border checkpoint, according to official reports.
According to statements from the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, a criminal case under charges of engaging in sexual relations with a person under the age of 16 was initiated against the young man back in March. A court in Uzbekistan had purportedly issued an in absentia arrest warrant, prompting authorities to place him on the wanted list.
Subsequent background checks revealed that the individual had been residing in the Russian Federation illegally. For several months, he supposedly worked at a construction site in the Volgograd region. Local migration services additionally subjected him to administrative liability for violating migration regulations prior to his apprehension.
At present, the detainee is being held in a pre-trial detention facility while authorities process the formal procedures for his pending extradition back to Uzbekistan to face the initiated legal proceedings.
