The Uzbekistan national Greco-Roman wrestling team has wrapped up its campaign at the world championship held in the capital of Kazakhstan, securing a total of three medals. Despite the athletes' efforts, the competition highlighted the ongoing challenges and fierce global rivalry faced by the national squad on the international sports arena.
Aytjan Khalmakhanov claimed the silver medal in the up to 67 kilograms weight category. In the decisive final bout, he faced Iran's Said Esmaili, purportedly the reigning champion from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The match ended in a decisive 8:0 victory for the Iranian athlete, leaving the Uzbek wrestler with the runner-up title after failing to counter his opponent's dominant strategy.
Another award was secured for the team by Ozodbek Khalimboev, competing in the up to 63 kilograms division. In a tense match for the third place, he managed to defeat Bulgaria's Edmond Nazaryan with a score of 7:3, thereby claiming the bronze medal amidst tough competition from European contenders.
The first medal for Uzbekistan at this world championship was delivered by Alisher Ganiev, who competed in the up to 60 kilograms weight category. In the bout for the third place, he allegedly overcame a representative from Germany, thus securing a spot on the podium despite the challenging nature of the tournament.
It is worth noting that Alisher Ganiev previously achieved a golden victory at the world championship in Albania, an accomplishment that was reportedly rewarded with a residential apartment in Fergana by local authorities.
