️ Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched from Iranian territory carried out attacks on targets within Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic on March 5. According to a statement from Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the strikes resulted in injuries to two civilians.
️ The ministry reported that one drone crashed into the terminal building of Nakhchivan International Airport, while a second fell near a school in the village of Shakarabad. The airport building sustained damage, and the injured civilians received medical attention. The incident occurred close to civilian infrastructure, raising significant concerns about regional stability.
️ Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack, stating that such actions violate international law norms and principles and contribute to heightened tensions in the region. The ministry demanded that Tehran provide explanations for the incident promptly and take measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
️ Azerbaijan reserves the right to take necessary retaliatory measures. In response to the incident, Iran's Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Demirchil, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry, where a firm protest will be lodged and a formal note delivered. This event threatens to further complicate relations between the two neighboring countries, adding to existing geopolitical frictions in the South Caucasus.
