️ The escalation of hostilities in the Middle East has plunged multiple sports tournaments worldwide, particularly in Gulf countries, into uncertainty during one of the busiest periods of the global sports calendar. The ongoing conflict has forced cancellations and suspensions, disrupting events and leaving athletes in limbo.

️ The attack by the United States and Israel on Iran, which resulted in the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggered retaliatory missile and drone strikes by Tehran targeting Israel and several military bases in the region where US forces operate. Iranian projectiles have repeatedly hit locations in Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Manama, and various parts of Saudi Arabia. This has thrown regional and global sports into disarray, with organizers scrambling to ensure the safety of athletes, officials, and fans.

️ A tennis tournament in the United Arab Emirates was at the center of the turmoil when the ATP Challenger event in Fujairah was halted after falling debris from a drone interception ignited a fire at an oilfield approximately 13km away. Belarusian player Daniil Ostapenkov and Japan’s Hayato Matsuoka were seen scrambling for shelter during their match in videos shared on social media. Ukrainian player Vladyslav Orlov stated on Instagram that he heard jet sounds and saw smoke nearby, deeming the situation unsafe. The tournament was subsequently cancelled, with initial evacuation plans involving costly charter flights later revised to free evacuations covered by the ATP.

️ Football, the region's most popular sport, has also faced significant disruption. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced the postponement of next week’s Asian Champions League matches scheduled in the Middle East until further notice, citing safety as a priority. The Qatar Football Association suspended all domestic matches, and UEFA delayed a decision on the Finalissima match between Argentina and Spain, originally set for March 27 in Doha. Discussions with local organizers are ongoing, with no alternative venue currently considered.

️ Beyond immediate events, Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026 is now in doubt, and Iraq’s travel for a playoff match remains unclear. Qatar has postponed the opening race of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) to later this year due to safety concerns. The new Formula One season, beginning in Australia, encountered logistical hurdles as teams chartered flights to bypass Middle East hubs, with a quarter of the F1 workforce initially slated to travel through the region.
