According to the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a strong earthquake was recorded in the country at 14:27 local time on October 10, 2024. The epicenter was located 120 km east of Tashkent, in a mountainous area, with a magnitude of 5.8.
In Tashkent, tremors were felt at 4-5 magnitude, and shaking was also observed in Tashkent, Samarkand, Jizzakh, and Syrdarya regions. Panic arose among the population, but no major casualties or destruction have been reported so far.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations stated that special groups have been formed to eliminate the consequences of the earthquake and that the situation is under control. Citizens were advised to remain calm and rely only on official sources of information.
Experts note that earthquakes of this magnitude occur in Uzbekistan every 5-10 years. Seismologists predict possible aftershocks in the coming days, but expect them to be weaker.
Currently, evacuation measures have been carried out in schools and kindergartens in cities, and temporary interruptions in gas and electricity supply were observed in some areas. The Ministry said that work to fully assess the consequences continues.
