Modern high-speed trains will be launched between Tashkent and Termez. The trains will be supplied through an agreement with Korean partners. To reduce travel time, modernization of railway infrastructure is planned.
Currently, passenger trains cover this distance in over 14 hours. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced at a regional development meeting on February 27 that agreements have been reached for the supply of high-speed trains.
To facilitate their operation, a project to adapt the Tashguzar-Baysun-Kumkurgan section for high-speed traffic and electrify the 103-kilometer Kumkurgan-Kudukli segment has been ordered to commence this year.
Simultaneously, work is underway to improve roads: a $183 million project with the Asian Development Bank is being implemented to convert the 111-kilometer Baysun-Denau road section to cement-concrete pavement. This will double cargo flow and reduce travel time from three hours to one and a half.
Special attention will be given to reconstructing the 178-kilometer highway connecting Uzbekistan with Afghanistan and Tajikistan, which has not been updated for 30 years. Construction work is ordered to begin within three months.
Previously, the president tasked with modernizing railway fleets and increasing the capacity of wagon-building enterprises. At a meeting on February 25, the results of projects in freight and passenger wagon production were reviewed, and plans for the near future were defined.
