A former police officer in Khorezm Region, Uzbekistan, has been sentenced for a fatal hit-and-run incident. On September 27, 2025, a 29-year-old woman was killed in a road accident on the Urgench-Shavat highway. Umar Atamuratov, a senior inspector in the social prevention department of the regional police, was driving under the influence of alcohol with his headlights off. He struck the pedestrian, who was standing on the roadside, throwing her into a ditch. Atamuratov did not provide assistance and fled the scene. The victim later died in hospital.
During the trial, Atamuratov admitted to drinking alcohol but claimed he left to "get money" for medical care. Witnesses testified he did not help the victim. The Shavat District Court found him guilty under Part 2 of Article 266 (traffic safety violation causing death) and Part 2 of Article 117 (abandonment in danger) of Uzbekistan's Criminal Code. Mitigating factors included his two minor children, no prior convictions, and partial reconciliation with the victim's husband.
Atamuratov was sentenced to 3 years and 1 month in prison, with a 3-year driving ban. He will serve his sentence in a penal colony.
