A tragic road traffic accident occurred on March 4 in the Uzun district of Surkhandarya region, Uzbekistan. In the Surkhon neighborhood, a Nexia 2 car driven by a 28-year-old motorist struck a 6-year-old girl who was crossing the road. The child succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Following the incident, officials from the regional road traffic safety department and the district internal affairs department held a meeting at a local school in the Surkhon neighborhood, attended by community activists and parents of students. The discussions focused on road safety issues, particularly the prevention of traffic accidents involving children.
In response to concerns raised by residents, authorities have installed two elevated pedestrian crossings, a speed control radar near the school, and warning road signs in the Surkhon neighborhood area. Additionally, a new pedestrian crossing has been organized at the 104th kilometer of the D169 highway of national importance, with road markings and signs put in place.
Construction is also underway for an elevated pedestrian crossing near School No. 27, located at the 106th kilometer of the same highway, aimed at enhancing student safety. While these measures address immediate concerns, road safety remains a persistent challenge across Uzbekistan.
Last year, Uzbekistan recorded 9,226 road traffic accidents resulting in 2,188 fatalities and 8,901 injuries, with a yearly decrease of less than 1%. According to the Public Safety Department, the number of fatalities per 100,000 population has seen a more significant decline, dropping from 6.9 in 2021 to 5.7 in 2025 (-17%), yet these figures indicate that road safety issues continue to pose a serious public health risk.
