The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan has announced forecasts for the cotton harvest in 2024. According to ministry data, the cotton yield across the country is expected to reach 3.5 million tons, which is 10% higher than last year's figure. This growth has primarily been achieved through the introduction of new technologies and the modernization of irrigation systems.
A ministry representative emphasized the impact of reforms being implemented under Shavkat Mirziyoyev's agricultural development programs. He stated, "The use of modern methods in cotton cultivation and the provision of additional subsidies to farmers have helped increase productivity." However, some experts note that to realize these forecasts, it is necessary to address issues such as climate change and water scarcity.
Cotton holds a significant place in Uzbekistan's economy, as it is one of the main components of the country's exports. In 2023, cotton exports amounted to 2.8 million tons, and in 2024, this indicator is expected to increase to 3.2 million tons. The ministry also plans to implement projects aimed at developing the cotton processing industry, which will create additional jobs and increase added value.
Nevertheless, challenges persist in the agricultural sector. Limited water resources and the adverse effects of climate change threaten the sustainability of cotton cultivation. Experts highlight the need to adopt sustainable agricultural practices and strengthen international cooperation to address these issues. The ministry is working on developing new strategies in this area.
