The establishment of a Free Economic Zone (FEZ) named "Surkhon-Agro" has been announced in the Surkhandarya region of Uzbekistan. The zone will operate for 30 years and aims to become a center for greenhouse farming, ensuring year-round supply of agricultural products to the country. Its primary objective is to establish continuous production of vegetables and fruits, addressing Uzbekistan's needs during the autumn and winter seasons.
The project involves the construction of modern greenhouse complexes covering at least 940 hectares. A strong emphasis is placed on environmental sustainability, with plans to source half of the energy used from alternative sources by 2027. Activities of air-polluting enterprises will be gradually reduced to minimize ecological impact.
Participants in the FEZ will benefit from various incentives. These include free land lease for five years through online auctions, complimentary water usage for irrigation for three years, and guaranteed sales of produced goods from 2026 to 2028. In cases of abnormally cold weather, coal usage is permitted but strictly under environmental compliance. Additionally, free connection to utility networks is provided to support infrastructure development.
The creation of "Surkhon-Agro" is significant not only for the Surkhandarya region but for the entire nation. It is expected to generate new employment opportunities, enhance infrastructure, and ensure stable year-round supply of vegetables and fruits to the population. Notably, in January 2026, Uzbekistan earned nearly $100 million from vegetable and fruit exports, highlighting the sector's economic potential.
