The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan has announced preliminary data for the 2024 cotton harvest. According to the ministry, the country's cotton yield increased by 15% compared to last year, reaching 3.5 million tons, the highest figure in the last decade. Minister Alisher Shukurov attributed this outcome to the effectiveness of policies aimed at "modernizing agriculture and providing additional benefits to farmers."

Samarkand, Fergana, and Bukhara regions led in cotton production, contributing over 60% of the total harvest. Shukurov stated that the introduction of new irrigation technologies and high-yield varieties has significantly boosted productivity. However, some experts have raised questions about the sustainability of this growth, as challenges such as climate change and water scarcity persist.

The government has launched new programs to diversify the cotton industry and encourage the cultivation of additional valuable crops. Shukurov said, "We are focusing not only on cotton but also on developing wheat, vegetables, and fruits, which strengthens the rural economy." These efforts are aimed at expanding Uzbekistan's export opportunities for agricultural products.

Despite the success of the cotton harvest, public and organizational concerns remain regarding labor conditions and environmental impacts. While attempts have been made in recent years to improve labor legislation, reports of child labor and low wages in some areas continue to surface. The government has pledged to enhance monitoring and increase penalties to address these issues.
