By decree of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the results of the cotton harvest in the country have been officially announced. According to state statistics data, 3.5 million tons of cotton were harvested in the 2023 season, an 8% increase compared to the previous year. This growth was achieved through the modernization of agricultural technologies and additional subsidies for farm enterprises.
Government representatives emphasized the important role of the cotton industry in the economy, stating that these results “demonstrate the effectiveness of Uzbekistan’s reforms in the agricultural sector.” However, some experts warned that the increase in cotton harvest could put pressure on water resources and soil fertility, potentially leading to sustainability issues in the future.
President Mirziyoyev ordered the expansion of additional financial assistance and credit opportunities for farmers to stimulate cotton harvesting. While these measures are aimed at further increasing cotton production, some regions have also seen discontent related to labor conditions and wages. The government reported that it is working on developing new regulatory documents to address these issues.
The cotton harvest results are significant for boosting Uzbekistan’s export revenues and strengthening its competitiveness in the global market. However, maintaining a balance between economic growth and environmental and social problems remains a key challenge for the government in the coming years. Statistical data shows that the annual contribution of the cotton industry is around 15%, confirming its central role in the country’s economy.
