Uzbekistan's government has approved a new procedure for the legalization and taxation of foreign residents, as per a resolution adopted on May 21. Foreign citizens can now obtain a special tax status by paying a one-time fee of $50,000.

The special status is granted for up to five years (based on the period specified in the application) and can be extended to the applicant's adult close relatives upon request. The entire process can be completed remotely via the unified government portal my.gov.uz or electronic tax services, as well as through in-person visits to government service centers.

To pay the fixed fee, the foreigner must open an account in a local bank or a crypto wallet after the application is approved. The required documents are minimal: a copy of the passport and a document confirming legal stay in the country, such as a valid visa.

Previously, it was reported that Uzbekistan's tax system would be transitioned to a digital management model, involving the introduction of artificial intelligence and gradual automation of fiscal processes by 2027. The reform aims to minimize bureaucracy, increase transparency, and shift to proactive administration, where key taxes and social benefits will be calculated automatically without the involvement of citizens and businesses.
