Following the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan has attracted over $600 million in green investments and grants for the implementation of national and regional projects.

This was announced at a meeting chaired by Aziz Abdukhakimov, advisor to the President of Uzbekistan on environmental issues. Representatives from relevant ministries and agencies discussed the initiatives put forward at the GEF Assembly.

It was noted that Uzbekistan has agreed to implement projects worth more than $50 million through GEF grants. Additionally, within the framework of the Eco Expo Central Asia 2026 exhibition, another $80 million in grants and over $520 million in green investments were attracted.

Key areas include the development of Samarkand as the green investment and innovation capital of Central Asia, as well as the launch of waste processing and energy production projects. In the coming years, 11 such plants are planned to be commissioned, enabling the processing of up to 5.5 million tons of waste annually.

Special emphasis was placed on projects for the Aral Sea region, where the “Desert Economy” initiative will be developed with international financing.

Major institutional projects were also discussed: the establishment of a scientific institute for sustainable development in partnership with international organizations, the formation of a national center for climate and hydrometeorology, and the development of interstate cooperation, including the “Clean Air” initiative.
