Uzbekistan is planning to launch a system for the buyback and recycling of cars manufactured 30 or more years ago, according to Podrobno.uz news agency.

The Waste Management Agency stated that such cars will be assessed at market value, purchased from owners, and sent for recycling. The new system is expected to help reduce harmful emissions, decrease waste volume, and return metals, plastics, glass, and other materials to processing.

Owners of old cars will be offered two settlement options. The first is an electronic voucher for a down payment on the purchase of a new car manufactured in Uzbekistan. The second is a cash payout of the voucher amount.

When using the voucher, the owner can get a discount on a new car and pay the remaining amount in installments over more than a year. Meanwhile, those who fail to turn in their old car for recycling on time will face an annual environmental compensation fee of 30 times the base calculation value.

Earlier, it was reported that Uzbekistan proposed charging an environmental compensation fee from owners of cars older than 30 years. According to the draft, the vehicle recycling system is to be implemented in stages.
