Heavy rains in the mountainous areas of Surkhandarya region have triggered a mudflow that damaged a bridge on the M-41 international highway, which connects Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Traffic has been temporarily suspended, and detour routes have been established.
According to official data, on June 21, 2026, between approximately 20:30 and 20:45, intense precipitation caused a sharp rise in the water level of the Obizarang River. The increased flow triggered a mudflow that damaged the bridge in the Sariosiyo district.
The bridge is located at the 1449th kilometer of the M-41 highway (Bishkek – Dushanbe – Termez), passing through the Anorzor mahalla. This section is a vital transport artery linking Uzbekistan with Tajikistan.
Preliminary reports indicate that the damage was caused by a sudden rise in water level and flow velocity, which placed critical stress on the bridge supports. Traffic has been halted for safety reasons.
The bridge was built in 1977 and is 54.7 meters long. It carries a significant traffic flow of up to 600–800 vehicles per hour.
Currently, traffic is being rerouted via a detour through the Dustlik, Yangi Yol, and Karashik mahallas of the Uzun district.
Representatives of local authorities and relevant services are working at the site. They are inspecting the bridge's technical condition, assessing damage, and developing measures to restore transport links.
Authorities emphasize that the situation is under control and that additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
Earlier, a mudflow damaged a bridge in the Bakhmal district of Jizzakh region, which leads to the Jum-Jumsay recreation area. At the time of the incident, dozens of vacationers were present but were quickly evacuated.
