Tashkent, Uzbekistan – Podrobno.uz. The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution "On strengthening the role of parliaments in accelerating social development," initiated by the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The document was supported by 61 countries representing all regions of the world.
The resolution calls on states to more actively involve parliaments in implementing the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The document emphasizes that parliaments play a key role in improving legislation, developing social protection systems, reducing poverty, ensuring decent employment, expanding access to education, and strengthening social integration.
Furthermore, the resolution provides for expanding the participation of women and youth in parliamentary activities, using digital technologies to solve social problems, developing international cooperation, and supporting developing countries.
These results are the outcome of consistent work to develop international inter-parliamentary dialogue. In recent years, the Senate of the Oliy Majlis has been actively involved in international parliamentary platforms, promoting Uzbekistan's initiatives within the Inter-Parliamentary Union, UN structures, and other reputable organizations.
The new resolution also proposes a fresh approach to the role of parliaments. The document sets tasks for legislative bodies to reduce poverty, strengthen social protection, ensure quality education and decent employment, expand opportunities for women and youth, and implement the Sustainable Development Goals.
Separately, the document welcomes the holding of the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Tashkent and the adoption of the Tashkent Declaration on parliamentary actions for social development and social justice.
The resolution also recommends that states more actively involve parliaments in preparing voluntary national reviews on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, strengthen parliamentary oversight of national commitments, expand interaction with civil society, and improve national statistical systems.
As noted by the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to the UN, the adoption of the document was preceded by a series of official consultations and bilateral negotiations, which made it possible to agree on a text that received broad support from UN member states.
