According to a memorandum signed on September 14 in Seoul in the presence of the leaders of Uzbekistan and South Korea, the country will establish the BIOME Cellular Technology Center, which will integrate genomic research, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and the development of medical products. This step aims to elevate the nation's scientific and medical potential to a new level.
The project will be implemented on the basis of the Center for Advanced Technologies of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan. The new BIOME center will become a full-cycle technological platform, covering the process from obtaining and studying cellular material to the development of cellular products and their practical application in clinics. One of the key elements of the center will be a biobank for storing collections of cellular material and providing it for scientific research. Genomic technologies will allow studying the properties and stability of cell lines, while bioinformatics and artificial intelligence will be used to analyze large arrays of biomedical data and search for new medical solutions.
The cellular technologies being developed are planned to be used in the treatment of tumors, restoration of damaged tissues, as well as in diseases for which existing therapies are insufficiently effective. At the same time, part of the necessary infrastructure in the republic has already been created. The first stem cell bank in the country operates on the basis of the Center for Advanced Technologies, storing more than 1,200 samples. The created cellular products are already used in the treatment of burns, tissue restoration, maxillofacial surgery, and ophthalmology, and a preparation based on NK cells for combating oncological diseases has been prepared for introduction.
Another direction of the future BIOME infrastructure will be the project "1000 Genomes of Uzbekistan," within which data from more than 1,200 participants have been collected, including about 10 million genetic markers. This database is used to create a genetic map of the country's population, assess disease risks, and develop personalized medicine. The creation of the center will allow combining existing developments into a single scientific and technological infrastructure and increasing the scale of research.
Recall that the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, at the first business summit "Central Asia — Republic of Korea" in Seoul, proposed combining the resources of the region's countries with the technologies and capital of Korea. Among the priorities are deep processing of raw materials, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and training of engineers. The meeting gathered leaders of all countries in the region and the President of the Republic of Korea, Lee Jae-myung.
