A 17-year-old schoolboy was detained in Chirchiq, Tashkent region, after receiving a parcel from Russia containing a large consignment of hashish. Nearly a kilogram of the drug was hidden inside tin cans, according to the press service of Uzbekistan’s Customs Committee.

The operation was conducted by officers from the Customs Committee’s anti-smuggling department together with operatives from the State Security Service and the Interior Ministry. The teenager was detained at the moment of receiving the parcel. When the package was opened in the presence of witnesses, hashish was found hidden inside four tin cans.

During a search of the schoolboy’s home, electronic scales, zip bags and insulating tape were also found. These items were seized as material evidence. According to the Customs Committee, 852.2 grams of hashish amount to more than 60,000 doses. The street value of such a consignment is estimated at nearly $600,000.

A criminal case has been opened and an investigation is underway. The Customs Committee urged parents to keep a closer eye on their children, including paying attention to whom they communicate with on social media and how they spend their free time.

Earlier, law enforcement officers in Namangan and Fergana regions intercepted the distribution of 24 kilograms of hashish. One of the suspects smuggled 20 kilograms of the drug across the Naryn River from a neighbouring country.
