Starting October 1, the historic part of Bukhara will restrict the movement of vehicles not intended for passenger transport, according to a decree issued by the city mayor on September 21. The restriction covers the area from the Ark Fortress to the Poi Kalon ensemble and along Haqiqat Street to the Labi Hauz ensemble.
According to the mayor's office, the number of electric vehicles, rickshaws, velomobiles, bicycles, scooters, electric scooters, and other mechanical and electronic means of transportation not intended for passenger transport or failing to meet current requirements has increased in this area. This has led to chaotic movement, threats to the safety of tourists and pedestrians, and injuries.
The restrictions apply to electric scooters, rickshaws, mopeds, four-wheeled bicycles, electric scooters, and go-karts. Horse and camel riding is also prohibited in the area.
The Bukhara city police department, the regional department for ensuring safe tourism, the city state tax inspectorate, and the regional department of cultural heritage have been tasked with implementing the restrictions, installing information signs and road signs at entry and exit points. They are also required to notify individuals and legal entities operating in the historic area in advance and conduct explanatory work.
The mayor's decree states that alternative areas will be designated for self-employed individuals providing services using these vehicles. They can operate in Yangi O'zbekiston Park or Boqiy Bukhara Park in accordance with established procedures. The decree comes into force on October 1, 2026.
Earlier, it was reported that 20 anti-ram barriers would be installed in the old city of Bukhara to ensure safety and restrict traffic during mass events. In the four-stage project, barriers were initially planned for 5 locations. Recall that in late July, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the master plan for Bukhara until 2043. According to it, the city's population will reach 385,000, and the housing fund will increase from 4.46 million square meters to 8.09 million square meters. The development of the historic center will be carried out based on UNESCO requirements.
