A court in the city of Chirchik, Tashkent region, has delivered verdicts in a high-profile case involving local law enforcement officers, including a precinct inspector and a former department head. The officials were implicated in attempting to hush up a violent assault case by extorting and accepting bribes from the perpetrators rather than upholding the law.
According to court documents, the chain of events began on February 17 at a local café, where a citizen named Sh.M. attempted to intervene in a disturbance caused by an intoxicated woman. Instead of defusing the situation, the intervention triggered a hostile reaction, and a group of aggressive individuals—reportedly accompanied by patrol officers—was summoned to the scene. The victim was subsequently ambushed outside, brutally beaten, and chased down to a parking lot where the assault continued until he lost consciousness.
The battered victim was rushed to the Chirchik Central Hospital by an ambulance before being taken to the local internal affairs building by police officers. However, rather than conducting a transparent investigation into the violent attack, the case took a corrupt turn involving the precinct inspector.
Investigations revealed that the inspector allegedly extracted $2,700 from the attackers in an attempt to bury the case. He reportedly handed a portion of the illicit funds to the victim as a hush-money payout. The corrupt officer was eventually caught red-handed while allegedly attempting to disburse an additional $300 to the victim, leading to the subsequent criminal prosecution of both him and his superior.
