National certification exams in Native Language and Literature, scheduled to take place across all regions of Uzbekistan from October 24 to 26, will be conducted strictly on the basis of the current Latin-based version of the Uzbek alphabet. This was officially announced by the Knowledge Assessment Agency.
According to the agency, all testing materials have been compiled based on the existing alphabet standards. Test-takers are also required to use this exact version when writing answers to open-ended questions and essays during the examination process.
The agency's clarification comes in light of recent legislative amendments regarding the Uzbek alphabet, which were supposedly approved on October 21. Under the new law, the updated alphabet is scheduled to officially enter into force after a period of six months.
The proposed changes involve replacing the traditional O‘ and G‘ characters with Ö ö and Ğ ğ, as well as changing the Sh and Ch combinations into Ş ş and Ç ç. The transition to the updated alphabet is expected to be gradual, with school textbooks slated for conversion starting in 2027 and the complete transition across all classes planned for 2031.
