A United Nations (UN) peacekeeper was killed in an explosion at a UN position in southern Lebanon. The incident, which occurred near the village of Adchit al-Qusayr, also critically injured another peacekeeper. The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) stated it has launched an investigation to determine the origin of the projectile, as the force finds itself caught between ongoing exchanges between Iran-backed Hezbollah and the Israeli military.

UNIFIL primarily acts as an observer in the buffer zone between Lebanon and Israel, conducting foot and vehicle patrols. The mission's role has become increasingly precarious amid the escalating regional tensions, highlighting the fragile security situation in the area.

Israel's parliament has approved the 2026 state budget, dramatically increasing defense spending as the country engages in conflicts on multiple fronts. The defense allocation has risen by over $10 billion, pushing the total military budget above $45 billion—more than double its pre-Gaza war level in 2023. The overall national budget stands at 850 billion Israeli shekels (over $270 billion), the largest in the nation's history.

Israel, alongside its main ally, the United States, has been at war with Iran since late February. Concurrently, Israeli forces continue operations in Gaza and have invaded southern Lebanon to battle Hezbollah. Local media reports indicate the government also approved an $827 million advance for emergency military purchases.

Pakistan has announced its readiness to host peace talks between the US and Iran, with Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar claiming both sides requested Islamabad's facilitation. However, neither Washington nor Tehran has publicly confirmed any willingness to engage in such negotiations. In Tehran, Iran's parliament speaker dismissed talk of negotiations as a "cover," accusing the US of plotting a ground invasion despite reported diplomatic efforts.

As the conflict with Iran enters its fifth week, oil prices have surged to over $115 per barrel as Asian markets opened, reflecting growing economic instability and market anxiety over the prolonged regional warfare.
